Majority of dogs in the province of Iloilo were already vaccinated against rabies, data from the Provincial Veterinarian’s Office (PVO) showed.

As of April 30 this year, the province attained an anti-rabies vaccination rate of 72 percent.

The high accomplishment rating was attributed by PVO to the “effort given by the Municipal Agriculture Offices thru their dedicated agriculturists and livestock technicians with their hired and volunteer dog vaccinators.”

PVO head Dr. Darel B. Tabuada said they have purchased anti-rabies vaccines worth P8 million to vaccinate more than 70 percent of the total dog population in the province from February to April “to achieve herd immunity.”

The towns of Tigbauan, Tubungan, Cabatuan and Alimodian recorded the highest rates of vaccination with 100 percent accomplishment.

They were followed by New Lucena (98 percent), Batad (97 percent), Oton (96 percent), San Joaquin (94 percent), Concepcion (93 percent) and Ajuy (93 percent).

On the other hand, the towns of Janiuay (39 percent), Leon (39 percent), Maasin (37 percent), Bingawan (35 percent), and Sara (17 percent) logged the lowest vaccination rates.

The provincial government aims to make Iloilo rabies-free by 2030.IMT
