Majority of patients who died of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Iloilo City were unvaccinated, according to the City Health Office (CHO).

From January 1 to August 7, the CHO’s Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) recorded 243 COVID-19 deaths, of which 93 percent or 226 were not vaccinated.

The data also showed that majority of the fully vaccinated who contracted the disease were asymptomatic and experienced mild symptoms.

Some of them exhibited moderate symptoms of COVID-19 and only a few, especially those with comorbidities, suffered severe symptoms.

The city, as of Aug. 5, logged six cases of the more contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus. Of the figure, four are considered local and two are returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs).

“The nature of contagion and virulence of the Delta variant is such that vaccination has become an urgent necessity. With the vast capacity of our vaccination team and facilities, the only concern left is the vaccine supply,” Treñas said in his letter to National Inter-Agency Task Force (NIATF)

“It is our prayer that you act upon this humble request favorably and promptly that together, we may be instruments in increasing the people’s means of protection against the new relentless and more vicious strain,” he added.

The mayor wrote the letter to request for additional vaccine allocations as the city’s supplies will be good only until Aug. 17, to prepare early for massive roll-out to reach as many people as possible amid threats of the Delta variant.

The city has put a ceiling of up to 10,000 vaccinees a day as crowd-control while still under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) up to Aug. 15.IMT
