A desk catering to issues and concerns related to animal welfare is now available in all 10 stations under the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO).
The Iloilo City Animal Welfare Ordinance passed by the Sangguniang Panlungsod this year mandated the establishment of animal welfare desks in all police precincts.
The stations are mandated to designate an animal welfare officer to enforce the local ordinance and the Animal Welfare Act.
A ceremonial launch at the Tanza Police Station on Friday, Nov. 22, signaled the start of the operations of all desks.
It was marked by the signing of the pledge of commitment on animal welfare by city officials, police officers and advocates from non-government organizations.
“The welfare of animals reflects the very heart of our community. Together, we can ensure that Iloilo City remains a safe and humane place for humans and animals alike. Let us continue championing the cause of animal welfare and prove that when communities unite, extraordinary achievements are possible,” ICPO Director Col. Kim Legada said in his message.
Gabriel Corro, executive assistant from the Vice Mayor’s Office representing Acting Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon, said the initiative underscored the commitment of the local government “to promoting animal welfare and creating a compassionate environment for all living beings.”
“We commend the ICPO and the City Veterinarian for spearheading this meaningful project, which aligns with our shared vision for a safe, humane and inclusive community,” Corro said.
Councilor Ely Estante, chair of the city council’s animal welfare committee, said they also look forward to establishing the Animal Welfare Council as mandated by the ordinance.
The council, he said, will provide direction to ordinances related to animal welfare in the city.
Police stations will have a separate record dedicated to animal cruelty complaints.
City officials will also visit schools to campaign for responsible pet ownership.Perla Lena/PNA
