The economy of the province of Iloilo was significantly affected by the spread of African swine fever (ASF) and the occurrence of typhoons.
Based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the province posted an economic growth rate of 4.6 percent in 2023, slower than the 8.5 percent expansion in 2022.
The deceleration was mainly due to the 9.0 percent contraction in the agriculture, forestry and fishing (AFF) industry.
Engineer Jose Noel A. Cabaluna, the provincial government’s project evaluation officer, attributed the decline in AFF to ASF and weather disturbances.
ASF, a highly contagious viral disease afflicting domestic and wild pigs, affected nearly 30 towns in the province.
On the other hand, the province’s gross domestic product (GDP) increased by P9.42 billion from P206.01 billion in 2022 to P215.42 billion last year.
The fastest growths were observed in other services with 26.3 percent, followed by accommodation and food service activities with 23.4 percent, and transportation and storage activities with 22.8 percent.IMT
