President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed Tuesday, March 11, that the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte aligned with the Philippines’ commitment to Interpol.
In a Palace briefing, Marcos Jr. said Interpol Manila received an official copy of the International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant against Duterte. The Prosecutor General of the Department of Justice served the warrant as the former president arrived from Hong Kong.
“Interpol asked for help, and we obliged because we have commitments to the Interpol which we have to fulfill. If we don’t do that, they will not – they will no longer help us with other cases involving Filipino fugitives abroad,” according to him.
The President emphasized that honoring international agreements reflects the country’s role as a democratic nation.
Duterte was taken into government custody at Villamor Air Base after landing at 9:20 a.m. on Cathay Pacific flight CX 907 with his common-law wife, Honeylet Avanceña, and his entourage.
His plane later departed for The Hague, Netherlands, where he will face crimes against humanity charges over his war on drugs.IMT
