Business groups in Iloilo have joined the call to fast-track the expansion of the Iloilo International Airport in the town of Cabatuan town under a public-private partnership (PPP) scheme.
In a statement, the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation, Inc. (ILED), chaired by engineer Terence Uygongco, appealed for “swift action to enhance the airport’s deteriorating state.”
As the primary international and domestic gateway to Western Visayas, the airport’s outdated facilities and limited infrastructures have hindered economic growth and tourism potential, said Uygongco.
According to ILED, there is a critical need for a PPP approach to expedite the much-needed upgrades and ensure sustainable, world-class airport services.
“Collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors are paramount. Through PPP, we can leverage expertise and resources, ensuring efficient upgrades and long-term maintenance, benefiting both residents and visitors alike,” said Uygongco.
“ILED calls upon the CAAP (Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines) and private entities to join hands in this transformative endeavour, propelling Iloilo towards a vibrant, economically thriving future,” he added.
The Philippine Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (PCCI-Iloilo) also appealed to all concerned authorities to speed up the expansion of the airport.
“These may be done through additional government fund allocations and/or PPP Agreements. The urgent attention to this appeal will surely catalyze increased investments, business growth, employment and tourism for Iloilo and our neighboring provinces,” it said.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas and Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. have been leading the call to expand and improve the airport.
The two stressed the urgency of the proposal, citing the growing number of passengers that the airport caters to.
The daily passenger traffic at the airport last month reached 2,533 for arrivals and 2, 852 for departing passenger, Iloilo International Airport terminal supervisor Art Parreño noted.IMT
