The use of “boga” or an improvised cannon from cans and PVC pipe is the most common cause of fireworks-related injuries in Western Visayas, according to the Department of Health (DOH-6).

From December 21 to 27 this year, 28 injuries were recorded by both sentinel hospitals and non-sentinel hospitals in the region.

According to DOH-6, nine of the injuries were caused by boga. Other cases were due to “five-star” and other types of firecrackers.

Majority of the patients belonged to the 1 to 10 and 11 to 20 age groups. They sustained burns and eye injuries

The cases this year were lower by seven percent compared to 30 injuries recorded in the same period last year.IMT
