At least 16 people were killed and 12 were injured after a passenger bus plunged into a ravine in Barangay Igbucagay in Hamtic town, Antique province on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 5.
The Ceres bus overshot a concrete barrier in the zigzag mountainous area of the village around 4 p.m., according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
Based on initial reports, the bus, which was on its way to the northern part of Antique from Iloilo City, suffered from brake defects and lost its control.
Authorities are conducting further investigation to determine the actual cause of the accident.
As 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, PDRRMO has recorded 16 confirmed deaths, including the bus driver, conductor, and inspector.
Of the injuries, 8 are in critical condition and 4 are in stable condition.
“The total number of passengers, which was first estimated to be 53, is yet to be verified,” the provincial government said.IMT
