A male call center agent died after being hit by a modern jeepney along Megaworld Boulevard in Barangay Airport, Mandurriao district, Iloilo City early Wednesday morning, March 20.
The victim was identified by the Mandurriao police station as Hermie Cala, 55, of Alimodian town in Iloilo province.
Cala died shortly after he was brought to a hospital. He sustained a fatal head injury.
According to Police Chief Master Sergeant Alexandro Agilles of the Mandurriao police station, the victim was crossing a pedestrian lane when he was hit by the “speeding” jeepney.
Nardo was thrown about five meters away from the vehicle driven by Mark Joevel Babiera, 24, of Barangay San Antonio, San Miguel town, Iloilo.
Barbiera is currently under the custody of the police station.
In a statement, City Mayor Jerry Trenas said: “I condole with the family with the assurance that the city government will help with the burial expenses.”
Modern jeepney drivers, according to Trenas, need to “undergo re-training on traffic discipline by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the City Traffic Management Unit so as to avoid similar incidents in the future.”
In a separate statement, Megaworld’s Iloilo Business Park (IBP) said the accident “was a stern reminder to motorists to strictly adhere to traffic policies, especially in complying with speed limits.”
“It is unfortunate that such a reckless disregard to basic traffic rules of our estate resulted in the death of the victim.”
IBP assured that it will continue to cooperate with the city government and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in the ongoing investigation of the incident.IMT
