The province of Capiz continues to lead in aquaculture production in Western Visayas for 2024, according to the Philippine Statistic Authority (PSA).

PSA-Capiz registration officer Mary Caroline Denonong, during the 2024 PSA Capiz Agriculture and Fisheries Data Dissemination forum, reported that Capiz ranked first in the volume of aquaculture production in the region, contributing 43.2 percent.

Denonong also said that aside from aquaculture, the province is the first contributor to the island municipality with a 46.2 percent contribution, second in commercial with 22.2 percent, and fifth in marine municipality with 8.2 percent.

“In 2024, the province of Capiz recorded 111,260.44 metric tons (MT) of share to fisheries production volume by subsector in Western Visayas. Of this, 79.1 percent is aquaculture, 15 percent is from commercial fisheries, 5.3 percent from marine municipal fisheries, and 0.6 percent from inland municipal fisheries,” she added.

In terms of species produced, milkfish topped the list with 71,986.79 mt, followed by oyster (10,532.99 mt), bali sardinella (4,263.67 MT), mussel (3,028.97 MT), and mudcrab (2,194.03 MT).

Fimbriated sardines ranked sixth with 1,944.90 mt, followed by indian mackerel (1,230 mt), blue crab (1,157.88 MT), threadfin bream (1,142.28 mt), and slipmouth (1,038.61 MT).

Denonong further noted that only the aquaculture sector showed an increase in production, growing by 39.1 percent from 63,212.05 mt in 2023 to 87,955.55 MT in 2024.

However, commercial fisheries production declined by 17.8 percent, marine municipal fisheries dropped by 37.9 percent, and inland municipal fisheries experienced a significant decrease of 49 percent.

“Ang aquaculture, sya gid lang ang nakasurvive sa aton sector sang fisheries, buot silingon damo gid man ya ang nagaculture sang fisheries product,” she added.AGP/PLF/PIA Capiz
