The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) on Thursday approved to expand the coverage of incentives granted by the Iloilo City Government to elderlies.

Yesterday, the amended version of an ordinance that provides additional benefits and privileges to centenarians in the city hurdled the third and final reading.

Under the amended Ordinance 2017-053 or the Ilonggo Centenarian Ordinance, elderlies will receive P10 thousand when they reach the age of 80.

Those who reached the age of 90 will get P20 thousand and P50 thousand for centenarians or those who attained the age of 100.

Councilor Irene Ong, author of the ordinance, said the measure has no retroactive effect. “Our elderlies can avail of the cash incentives once they turn 80, 90 and 100 years old.”

Meanwhile, Councilor Jose Efrain Treñas III, chairman of the SP’s committee on appropriations, assured that the city government has adequate funds to cover the additional incentives.

According to him, P3 million is allocated every year for the implementation of the ordinance.

“Lowering the age bracket will ensure that our senior citizens receive the benefit while they are still strong and able to enjoy their cash incentives,” said Treñas.

The additional cash incentive for centenarians is on top of the P100 thousand cash gift from the national government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) as mandated by Republic Act 10868 or the Centenarians Act of 2016.IMT
