Mayor Jerry Treñas has extended the suspension of classes in Iloilo City until Thursday, Jan. 4, due to the “prolonged power outage.”

The suspension, which was recommended by the City Health Office (CHO), covers classes in all levels of public and private schools.

“Returning to school may further result in unfavorable classroom conditions given that some have no electricity and will not promote a positive learning environment,” Treñas said in a statement.

The power outage hit Iloilo City and other parts of Western Visayas on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 2, after multiple plants in Panay Island tripped.

This led the mayor to suspend classes on Wednesday, Jan. 3.

In a news release, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said the “unscheduled maintenance shutdowns of the largest power plants in Panay Island was the primary cause of the [massive power outage.]”

“We emphasize the need for improved planning to ensure sufficient generation per island, with a well-balanced mix of fuels and technology.”IMT
