The Western Visayas region has an adequate supply of pork and other pork products, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA-6).
DA-6 Regional Executive Director Remelyn Recoter, in an interview on Monday, Dec. 23, said the region is more than 200 percent self-sufficient in terms of its supply of pork and pork products.
She thanked local government units (LGUs) for taking measures to help protect WV from the spread of the African swine fever (ASF) virus.
“They imposed temporary ban on the entry of live hogs and processed pork-related products from areas affected by ASF,” said Recoter.
“Tani nakabulig man ini sa aton mga mangunguma diri kay wala sang may nagasulod sa aton nga halin sa iban mga lugar,” she added.
The region, Recoter said, remains ASF-free despite the confiscation of a canned ham, which tested positive for the ASF virus.
The Shanghai, China-made canned ham was seized from a tourist at the Kalibo International Airport in Aklan province.
“Okay lang kay naconfiscate sya. Wala na naglapta,” said Recoter.
Last month, Agriculture Secretary William Dar claimed that pork from China brought ASF to the Philippines.
In a report by Rappler, Dar said the confiscation of two cargo containers loaded with pork and meat products at the Port of Manila last October was a clear indication that ASF originated from China.
The products from China tested positive for ASF.
“Siling ko gani sa director sang aton Bureau of Animal Industry, dapat tutukan gid Kalibo airport kay out of 30 plus international flights, mga tunga dira halin sa ASF-affected countries.IMT
