The number of dengue cases in the province of Iloilo more than doubled in the first month of 2023.

The Provincial Health Office (PHO) recorded 90 cases of the mosquito-borne viral disease from Jan. 1 to 28.

The number was higher compared to 40 cases registered in the same period last year.

Dr. Maria Socorro Quiñon, PHO head, attributed the rise to incessant rains, which create breeding sites of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

She added that the continuous dengue transmission in areas where cases were detected last year also contributed to the increase.

The town of Estancia had the highest number of cases in the province with 9, followed by Barotac Nuevo, 8; Cabatuan, 6; Ajuy, Alimodian, Balasan, and Carles, 5 each; Pototan, Oton, and Calinog, 4 each; Banate, San Joaquin and Pavia, 3 each; and Concepcion, San Dionisio, Tigbauan Janiuay, Passi City, Badiangan, Dueñas, San Miguel and Barotac Viejo, 2 each.

The rest of the cases were from Batad, Dumangas, Lambunao, Sta. Barbara, Anilao, Bingawan, Dingle, and Miagao with one each.IMT
