The number of dengue cases in the province of Iloilo  soared to more than 100 in the first eleven days of 2025.

The Provincial Health Office (PHO) logged 105 dengue cases from January 1 to 11 this year, higher by 19 percent compared to 88 cases in the same period a year ago.

Dr. Rodney Labis, head of PHO’s Health Service Delivery Division, attributed the increase mainly to the presence of stagnant waters caused by intermittent rains.

Stagnant waters are perfect breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the main vector transmitting the dengue virus, he explained.

Most of the cases, according to PHO, were males aged 19 and below.

San Joaquin recorded the highest cases in the  province at 10, followed by Leon (8), Estancia (7), and Barotac Viejo and Cabatuan (6 each).

Ajuy, Oton, Guimbal, Janiuay, and Passi City accounted for five cases each.

Dengue symptoms include sudden onset of fever for two to seven days and at least two of the following: headache, body weakness, joint and muscle pains, pain behind the eyes, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and skin rashes.IMT
