The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-6) has urged revelers to dispose their garbage properly during this year’s Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo City.
“We love to enjoy the music, the fun, the food in times of festivities. But while we’re at it, let us not forget to be responsible,” said Livino Duran, DENR-6 executive director.
“Let us try our best to go for green and sustainable festivals, and contribute to a clean environment,” he added.
DENR-6 noted that locals and visitors produce more than 80 tons of trash on the final day of the festival every year.
“More than 80 tons of garbage in one day is too much. We hope this year we can go as clean as possible. Let us put our trash in proper waste bins, and avoid mixing our wastes,” said Duran.
To lessen plastic wastes, the DENR official encouraged the festival goers to bring their own water bottles and reusable cups.
The Dinagyang Festival is one of the biggest and most highly anticipated tourism events in the country. It is held every fourth Sunday of January.
This year, the Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI) is expecting at least 200,000 visitors in the city from January 21 to 28.IMT
