Retail prices of eggs in Western Visayas have gone up, based on the latest Bantay Presyo (price monitoring) report by the Department of Agriculture (DA).
Currently, the price range of eggs at the Iloilo Central Market and the Iloilo Terminal Market – the two biggest markets in Iloilo City – is from P7 to P11 per piece.
Medium-sized eggs at Alibhon Market in Jordan, Guimaras and Kalibo Public Market in Aklan are being sold at P9.50 per piece.
Maria Teresa Solis, DA-6 Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division head, attributed the slight increase in egg prices to the growing demand for the product.
She said they expect the prices of eggs, which are used in making cakes and pastries, to continue rising as the holiday season approaches.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Egg Board Association (PEBA) noted that the extreme heat caused by El Niño has affected the region’s egg production.IMT
