Iloilo City Councilor Ely Estante is keen to impose fines for violators of the closed circuit television (CCTV) Ordinance.

The ordinance requires all high-risk areas, including business establishments, to install CCTV cameras.

Estante said implementing fines would compel establishments to obey the measure.

According to the councilor, many business owners remained non-compliant with the ordinance.

“Syempre indi lang na asta sa installation. Dapat they have to make sure nga gafunction sya 24/7,” Estante said.

The councilor is eyeing to impose a fine of P5,000 for the first offense.

Estante is also planning to require establishments to submit the recordings of their CCTV cameras to the police.

“They have to cooperate sa aton mga kapulisan para indi madelay ang investigation sang krimen nga natabo sa ila or malapit sa ila,” the councilor stressed.

Based on the existing version of the ordinance, the police must first secure an order from the court to secure the recordings.

Estante said he is still finalizing the proposed amendments.

The CCTV ordinance, authored by Estante, was approved in 2011.

In 2013, it was amended to include all seaports and accomodation establishments in the city as high-risk areas.IMT
