Former Iloilo City mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, who returned to the Philippines earlier this week, has appealed to his fellow Ilonggos for prayers and support.
“[Mabilog] humbly requests the prayers and support of his fellow Ilonggos, whose trust and love he has cherished throughout his service,” lawyer Jeric Jucaban, the former mayor’s legal counsel, said in a statement on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
“He longs to return to his beloved city and reconnect with the community he holds dear,” he added.
Mabilog arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 on Tuesday morning, Sept. 10.
“After careful consideration and assessment of the current judicial system, [Mabilog] has decided to come back, trusting in the current administration’s commitment to due process and fairness,” Jucaban said.
Upon his arrival, the former mayor “voluntarily surrendered” to National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) operatives.
“This move underscores his respect for the law and his readiness to address the matters that have been pending against him,” Jucaban said.
Mabilog posted bail amounting to P90,000 for his temporary liberty.
The Sandiganbayan Third Division issued an arrest warrant against Mabilog for violation of the “Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees” and the “Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.”
In 2023, the Office of the Ombudsman filed graft charges against Mabilog and councilor Plaridel Nava II before the Sandiganbayan over alleged intervention in the awarding of a government contract to a towing services firm where they have an interest in.
The former mayor left the country in August 2017 due to fear for his life. He was granted political asylum in the United States.
Mabilog was baselessly accused by then-president Rodrigo Duterte of being a drug protector.IMT
