Congress has tripled the Free Wi-Fi for All Program budget to P7.5 billion, aiming for 50,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots.

“In the 2025 General Appropriations Law, we allocated P7.5 billion for the program, three times the P2.5 billion for 2024,” said Makati City Rep. Luis Campos Jr., vice chairperson of the House appropriations panel.

Campos said that expanding free Wi-Fi hotspots will improve access to online learning, especially in remote areas.

He also hopes the free internet will help rural Filipinos access online resources, including government training for jobs and livelihood opportunities.

Ookla’s December 2024 Global Speedtest Index showed the Philippines’ average mobile internet speed is still slow at 36.36 Mbps, well below regional peers like Thailand (65.47 Mbps), Vietnam (86.96 Mbps), Malaysia (105.36 Mbps), and Singapore (129.13 Mbps).IMT
