Senator Win Gatchalian has called for an inquiry into the continued rise of text scams, despite the implementation of the SIM registration law.
Two years after the its enforcement, Gatchalian said text scams remain widespread, with an estimated 600,000 victims in 2024 alone.
He filed Resolution No. 1324 to investigate the issue further.
This comes as proposals surface to require SIM card owners to register in person, similar to applying for a driver’s license or NBI clearance.
“This proposal would be inconvenient for consumers, as it would require them to register in person, similar to the process of applying for a driver’s license or an NBI clearance,” said Gatchalian.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology has acknowledged that scammers are using advanced tactics, including text hijacking and counterfeit cell sites, to send fraudulent messages and deceive users.IMT
