The price of ginger in Iloilo City soared to more than P200 per kilogram (kilo) this week.
In a report by radio station RMN-Iloilo, ginger is being sold at retail price of P220 to P250 per kilo in Iloilo Terminal Market.
The price is higher compared to P160 to P180 per kilo last week.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) attributed the increase to the declining supply mainly due the growing demand from the processing industry.
“We must understand na ang luya, hindi lang natin ginagamit pangbahay, pangluto… So nag-aagawan ngayon ng supply. This is also being used now for processing. So, the spike in prices shows that there is a tight supply availability as of the moment,” DA Undersecretary for High-Value Crops Cheryl Marie Natividad-Caballero explained.
Another reason for the price spike, according to DA, is seasonal production.
“Yung mga na harvest noong March-April, nasa mga palengke na ngayon. Tumaas ang presyo dahil nasa stage na rin ng tag-ulan,” Caballero said.IMT
