The heat index in Iloilo may hit 40 degrees Celsius (ºC) next week, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The projected heat index or the temperature as felt by the human body is one degree Celsius away from the “dangerous” level (41ºC to 54ºC).

Weather specialist Ferdinand L. Rubin Jr. said high indices can cause fatigue, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

So far, the highest heat index recorded this year in Iloilo was 39ºC, the weather bureau noted.

Last March 16, PAGASA declared the onset of dry season in the country, signifying the start of warmer temperatures.

“Sa pagtaas sang temperature may posibilidad man nga magtaas ang heat index,” said Rubin.

“Climatologically speaking, hot and dry season usually from March to May so ekspektar naton nga ini nga kainiton nga aton mabatygan durig these months,” he added.

Ruben advised the public to stay out of the sun, drink a lot of water, avoid drinking of hot tea, coffee and even softdrinks in the noon and afternoon, and refrain from engaging in physical activities.Davin Dave Salva/IMT
