Efforts to solve the flooding problem in Iloilo City are underway, according to Congresswoman Julienne Baronda.
Baronda proposed a comprehensive drainage system to address the problem.
“The flooding we experienced since [July 16], necessitates a comprehensive drainage system for [the city] that encompasses each and every barangay,” she said in a press statement issued on July 17.
“Towards this end, I already made representation with DPWH Sec. Mark Villar last month. He has acceded to this idea.”
Baronda is hoping to have “a new updated study on our drainage problem the soonest time possible.”
“This is our long-term plan,” she said.
Meanwhile, Baronda urged the public to “clean the canals/sewers of garbage that cause the clog up.”
“We enjoin the punong barangays and all barangay officials to lead the communities in the de-clogging of the drainage systems,” she said.
“My office will work hand in hand with Mayor Jerry P. Trenas and the city government to address the flooding problem,” Baronda assured.
Several parts of the city experienced flooding due to rains brought about by the tropical storm-enhanced southwest monsoon or “Habagat.”
Classes from pre-school to senior high school in both public ang private schools in the city were suspended on July 16 to 17.
The heavy downpour also damaged some houses and uprooted huge trees in the city./IMT
