A married couple died when a 10-wheeler truck hit their car along the national highway in Barangay Amamaros, Pototan, Iloilo on Monday afternoon, April 19.
Emil Pagtolon-an and his wife Merren, residents of Barangay Bagacay in Passi City, were brought to a hospital but declared dead on arrival.
The couple, who were pinned to their seats, suffered severe body injuries.
Rescuers took several minutes before they were able to remove the couple’s bodies from the wrecked SUV.
The truck driver, identified as Regent Albacete, 20, of Mandurriao district in Iloilo City, sustained minor injuries. He is currently under police custody.
According to witnesses, the “speeding” truck, which was on its way to the city, tried to overtake another vehicle but failed to return to its lane, resulting in the collision.
Emil, a seafarer, and Merren, a teacher, were heading home to Passi City when they figured in the road mishap.
Police Sergeant Raffy Gonzales of the Pototan police station said further investigation is ongoing.IMT
