The initial damage to agri-fishery sector caused by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami) here has reached over P20 million, according to the latest report of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) on Monday, Oct. 28.

Kristine has also left one dead and damaged 92 fishing boats and destroyed some 4,703 houses, PDRRMO officer Cornelio Salinas said.

Salinas said the fatality was a 77-year-old male from Barangay Bagacay in San Rafael town.

“He accidentally fell while fixing the roof of his house,” he said.

He added the initial report from the Provincial Agriculturist Office showed damage of about P20.9 million to agriculture, consisting of P18.67 million for rice, P1.79 million for fisheries, P413,001 for high-value crops, and P24,000 for poultry.

Further, two municipalities reported that 79 fishing boats were partially damaged and 13 was destroyed.

Also 4,613 houses were partially damaged and 90 destroyed valued at some P1.97 million.

Despite the impact of the weather disturbance, the province could not yet declare a state of calamity.

“The requirement should be 30 percent of the total population,” Salinas said.

Meanwhile, Salinas called on coastal communities to be vigilant, especially during nighttime, amid the Tropical Storm Leon.

He also advised those near rivers not to venture into crossing in case of high water because that is usually the cause of drowning and missing persons.IMT
