Alcoholic drinks are no longer allowed at the newly opened Sunset Boulevard effective Feb. 3.

Mayor Jerry Treñas announced the ban during a press briefing.

“I don’t think we will be able to allow drinking to continue. Prior to the issuance of a specific ordinance covering all aspects, I will be issuing an executive order to that effect,” he said.

To further ensure public safety, Treñas will request the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to deploy breath analyzers and conduct sobriety tests on drivers before they board their vehicles.

He said it was unfortunate that everyone was caught by surprise with the magnitude of people visiting the place and the garbage they left behind.

The city government will place temporary garbage bins to encourage proper waste disposal.

The Office of the City Veterinarian will also round up dogs roaming in the area.

Those with collars will be returned to their owners, while they will bring the stray ones to the dog pound, where they will be vaccinated, spayed and neutered so they won’t pose any danger, he added.

Ambulant vendors will be allowed provided they have permits, including health and sanitary permits from the city government.

Treñas also directed Iloilo City Police Office director Col. Kim Legada to ensure police visibility and enforce ordinances, including the ban on alcoholic drinks in public places, the curfew for minors, and the anti-littering policy.

The Executive Order outlining regulations at Sunset Boulevard is set for release today, while a proposed ordinance will be submitted to the Sangguniang Panlungsod on Tuesday.Perla Lena/PNA
