The Iloilo City Government is bracing for Typhoon “Kammuri” (local name “Tisoy”).
The weather disturbance, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), is likely to intensify into a super typhoon because of the amihan or cool winds from the northeast.
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas issued an executive order “raising the alert level to ‘Blue Alert Status’ and activation of the Iloilo City Emergency Operations starting [today]”, Nov. 29.
“Pursuant to Section 16 and in relation to Section 445 (a) and (b) 1( vii) of the Local Government Code of 1991, the City Mayor as Chief Executive is empowered to emergency measures before, during and in the aftermath of man-made and natural disasters and calamities so as to ensure the safety and welfare of the people,” part of EO No. 148 read.
“The City (DRRM) Office continues to monitor weather updates through DOST-PAGASA and other related warning agencies on the weather conditions, also, members of the Response Clusters are on stand-by for any emergency,” it added.
The typhoon is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) either tomorrow, Nov. 30 or Sunday, Dec. 1.
PAGASA said Kammuri now has maximum winds of 140 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gustiness of up to 170 km/h.
The typhoon is already 1,470 kilometers east of Southern Luzon, slowly moving northwest.
Some local governments in Iloilo province ordered class suspension this morning due to intermittent heavy rains.IMT
