A candidate for mayor in Iloilo City was arrested on Friday, Feb. 18, over six counts of cyberlibel filed by former congressman and now gubernatorial candidate JC Rahman Nava of Guimaras.
Salvador “Jun” Capulot, 42, of Alta Tierra Village in Barangay Balabago, Jaro district, Iloilo City was served with an arrest warrant by personnel of Jaro Police Station for violation of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
Dated Feb. 15, the arrest warrant was issued by Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 65-Guimaras Presiding Judge Rosario Abigail Magay Dris-Villanueva.
The recommended bail was set at P10, 000 for each case.
Lawyer Hans Sayno, Nava’s legal counsel, Capulot’s libelous attacks against his client transpired during one of his radio program episodes.
Meanwhile, incumbent City Mayor Jerry Treñas denied that he had a hand in the issuance of the arrest warrant against Capulot, his his staunch critic.
“I have nothing to do with the warrants of arrest served on my opponent Jun Capulot. I understand that these warrants were issued by the Regional Trial Court of Guimaras in libel cases filed therein. Wala guid ako labot sa ini nga mga kaso,” he said in a statement.
The former radio broadcaster secured temporary freedom after posting his bail.
Capulot has yet to issue a statement.IMT
