The Carmelite Monastery and Convent along Jereos Street in Barangay Lopez Jaena Norte, La Paz district, Iloilo City has been placed on temporary lockdown.
This, after 25 nuns, mostly seniors, and nine staff members contracted the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Jeck Conlu, City COVID-19 Team spokesperson, said one of the nuns underwent swab testing on July 22 after experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.
The test result came out on July 23 and the nun was found to be positive of the coronavirus.
Forty-five other residents of the monastery were swabbed and 33 of them tested positive for COVID-19.
Of the infected residents, six are symptomatic and the rest are asymptomatic or have not manifested any symptom of the disease.
The eldest among them is a 93-year-old nun while the youngest is a 17-year-old female staffer.
Conlu said all those who got infected are currently under isolation inside the monastery while those who were found negative will still be quarantined for close monitoring.
The 34 positive cases in the monastery were among the 104 confirmed cases reported the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) on Sunday, July 25.IMT
