Iloilo City is this year’s Top Gold Awardee for the Most Bike-Friendly City in the Philippines in the Mobility Awards 2021.

The city, which has been dubbed as the “Bike Capital of the Philippines”, bested 29 other cities in the country, including Naga City and Mandaue City.

The winners of the Mobility Awards 2021 were announced during a virtual awarding ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 25.

“With our desire for a sustainable city, we provided an alternative mode of transportation that aims to lessen carbon footprints as our response to the rising impact of climate change,” Treñas said in a pre-recorded speech.

The city government will receive a Gold Bicycle-Friendly Recognition Sign, a certification designating the city’s ranking, and gift certificates from bicycle-friendly establishments worth P10,000 for the city’s team members.

“Iloilo City is dubbed as the Bike Capital of the Philippines, and we are very proud to extend this recognition to our beloved people who also made a huge impact in achieving a more sustainable metropolis. Daku naman nga pagkilala ang aton nabaton sa likod sang tanan naton nga pinangabudlayan,” said Treñas.

The mayor, during the ceremony, shared that the city government developed a 11-kilometer bike lane in the metropolis to keep bikers and commuters safe. The project includes the 4-kilometer protected bike lane along Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue (Diversion Road).

According to Treñas, the city is planning to interconnect all the bike lanes all over the urban center for easier transport and mobility, expanding into a total of 32 kilometers.

“I believe that bike lanes contribute more spaces on the roads, and an improved traffic flow because cyclists do not need to dodge cars in the road while maintaining safety in turning and avoiding fixed obstacles,” he said.IMT/Photo by Arnold Almacen
