The province of Iloilo recorded 135 cases of leptospirosis from January 1 to October 6 this year, data from the Provincial Health Office (PHO) showed.
The number, which includes three deaths, was lower by 57 percent compared to 314 cases logged in the same period a year ago.
The town of Leon had the highest cases in the province at 11, followed by Oton (9), Tigbauan (9), Alimodian (7), and Pavia, Pototan and Sta. Barbara (6 each).
The deaths came from Leon, Barotac Nuevo and Cabatuan.
To prevent leptospirosis infection, PHO advised the public to avoid wading through floodwaters. If unavoidable, they must wear boots or any suitable footwear for protection.
Leptospirosis is a water-borne illness caused by the leptospira bacteria, which is commonly found in the urine of infected animals such as rats, livestock, dogs, cats, and even some marine mammals.
