The province of Iloilo logged 23 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever from January 1 to 4 (Morbidity Week 1) this year.

The number was lower by 36 percent compared to the same period in 2024, according to Dr. Rodney Labis of the Provincial Health Office.

The towns of Barotac Viejo and Cabatuan accounted for the highest cases at three each, followed by Ajuy, Leon, Oton, Sta. Barbara, and Tigbauan with two each.

Alimodian, Estancia, Guimabal, Leganes Maasin, Pavia and Pototan registered one case each.

To avoid dengue infection, Labis urged the public to practice the 5S Strategy or the five key actions.

The 5S Strategy stands for Search and destroy, Self-protection measures, Support fogging, Seek early consultation, and Sustain hydration.

Dengue, which mainly affects children, is transmitted through the bite of an Aedes mosquito, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Symptoms include sudden onset of fever for two to seven days and at least two of the following: headache, body weakness, joint and muscle pains, pain behind the eyes, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and skin rashes.IMT
