A six-year-old boy in the town of Miagao was the first recorded dengue-related fatality in the province of Iloilo this year, according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO).
The child, based on his death certificate, died from hypovolemic shock, lower gastrointestinal bleeding, severe dengue and high-risk PCAP on Feb. 11.
The fatality was among the eight dengue cases logged in the town from January 1 to Feb. 17. The figure was higher by 300 percent compared to two cases registered in the same period a year ago.
Other towns with the highest number of dengue cases were Oton (22), Pavia (16), Passi City (14), Dumangas (14), San Joaquin (12), Barotac Nuevo (11), Lambunao (9), Cabatuan (8), Banate (7) Dueñas (7), San Rafael (7), Lemery (7) and Mina (7),
All in all, PHO registered 251 dengue cases, higher by 10 percent compared to last year’s 228 cases.
Dengue, which mainly affects children, is transmitted through the bite of an Aedes mosquito, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Its symptoms include sudden onset of fever for two to seven days and at least two of the following: headache, body weakness, joint and muscle pains, pain behind the eyes, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and skin rashes.IMT
