The entire province of Iloilo has been placed under a state of calamity due to the outbreak of dengue, a mosquito-borne disease.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan adopted on Tuesday, Aug. 20, a resolution declaring a state of calamity in the province.

The declaration was recommended by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC).

According to PDRRM Office head Cornelio R. Salinas, the provincial government allocated P13.6 million from its quick response fund.

The amount will be used to purchase medical supplies to be distributed among local government units and hospitals for their dengue outbreak response, chemical and acid-resistant sprayers, and IV fluids.

From January 1 to August 17, the Iloilo Provincial Health Office’s Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit recorded 5,836 cases with 10 deaths.

The total number was higher by 417.8 percent compared with the 1,127 cases registered in the same period last year.IMT
