The airport and seaports in Iloilo have been urged to implement health measures to prevent the entry of mpox.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod approved on Wednesday, Sept. 4, a resolution calling for the strict implementation of measures against mpox in major entry points.
“Measures, including the installation of thermal scanners at airports and ports as well as increased visual surveillance by officers, must be implemented,” the resolution stated.
“Surveillance may also be increased by implementing a health declaration system,” it further stated.
According to the resolution authored by Councilors Alan Zaldivar and Candice Magdalane Tupas, the “high traffic at airports and ports can play a key role in the spread of the disease through persons and conveyances.”
Currently, there are eight active mpox cases in the country.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is an infectious disease caused by a virus transmitted to humans by infected animals. It can also be passed from human to human through close physical contact.
According to the Department of Health (DOH), common symptoms of mpox include a skin rash or mucosal lesions, which can last two to four weeks.IMT
