Ilonggo historian Demetrio “Demy” Sonza died on Monday morning, Jan. 22. He was 89.
His family confirmed his passing but has yet to disclose the circumstances of his death.
Sonza served the province of Iloilo as Provincial Board member from 1988 to 1992.
The native of Sta. Barbara town became vice governor from 1995 to 2001 and returned to the Provincial Board in 2010 until 2019.
In a statement, Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. expressed deep sorrow over the death of Sonza.
“As we come to terms with this profound loss, our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Sonza’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him,” he said.
“His legacy will undoubtedly endure through the lives he touched and the impact he made on our community,” the governor added.
Sonza’s contributions to the field of history and his dedicated service as board member and vice governor have left an indelible mark on our community “have left an enduring legacy that has greatly enriched the cultural and historical fabric of our province,” according to Defensor.
“His wealth of knowledge, passion for preserving our heritage, and commitment to public service have inspired many,” he added.IMT
