An Ilonggo lawyer has been appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. as undersecretary of the Department of Education (DepEd).

The appointment of Atty. Peter Irving Corvera was announced by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) on Aug. 4.

“So here I am, embarking on another journey, with all its challenges, to uplift Philippine education under a Secretary who, I believe, can make it happen,” he said in a Facebook post.

Corvera, who served as chairman of the Central Philippine University’s (CPU) Board of Trustees, was sworn into office by DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara on Aug. 5.

“When I left government service eight years ago, I told myself that I had already fully paid my dues to the Filipino people. Since then, I enjoyed a relatively quiet and uneventful life. However, I knew that sooner or later, something that would draw me out from the comforts of retirement,” Corvera said.

“In my case, it necessarily had to be a cause of utmost significance, led by someone with unquestionable competence and integrity and a sincere desire to effect real and lasting change,” he further said.

Corvera also served as undersecretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) from 2014 to July of 2016. He supervised the Bureau of Fire Protection and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and assisted the secretary of the agency in supervising the Philippine National Police on operational matters.IMT
