The Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) has appealed to the public to continue helping its campaign against dengue to further reduce the number of new infections.

The province logged 95 new dengue cases during the 13th monitoring week, lower compared 111 cases recorded in the previous one to two weeks.

IPHO registered 209 cases of the mosquito-borne disease in the past three to four weeks and 222 in the last five to six weeks.

Dr. Maria Socorro Quiñon, IPHO chief, attributed the downtrend to   everyone’s participation in activities of the provincial government’s Limpyo Iloilo, Kada Lunes nga Lihok Kontra Lamok, a province-wide clean-up drive that aims to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

Despite the decreasing number of new cases, Quiñon told the public remain vigilant and not become complacent.

From Jan. 1 to March 29, the province recorded a total of 1,223 dengue cases, including seven deaths from the towns of Pototan (2), Carles (2), Oton (1), Tigbauan (1), and Balasan (1).

Dengue is transmitted through the bite of an Aedes mosquito, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Its symptoms include sudden onset of fever for two to seven days and at least two of the following: headache, body weakness, joint and muscle pains, pain behind the eyes, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and skin rashes.IMT
