Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr. has issued an executive order (EO) implementing Minimum Public Health Standards in Hazardous Heat Index (MPHS-HHI) due to the El Niño phenomenon.

“The heat index range for the month of May is considered hazardous to the public and demands the imposition of MPHS-HHI,” EO No. 118 stated.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the heat index could reach 46 degrees Celsius (°C) and above this month.

Defensor told Ilonggos to avoid direct exposure to the sun between 8 a.m to 5 p.m, keep themselves hydrated, and wear thin clothes.

He also enjoined residents to refrain from joining and holding social/public events and gatherings outdoors and limit their outdoor movement to travel and for purposes of work.

“Residents shall not be exposed to heat at temperature above 33°C for a period exceeding 20 minutes to prevent heat-related diseases,” Defensor said.

Furthermore, establishments, work places and offices, should suspend the wearing of thick and layered uniforms, adjust work hours, and designate safety officers to monitor work conditions and the health of workers.IMT
