In response to the challenges faced by midwives in the Philippines, Senator Imee Marcos filed a bill to strengthen and develop the profession, especially in public health and rural areas.

“Our midwives often run far-flung RHUs (rural health units) alone, providing essential health services to communities located miles away, despite their singular role of bringing forth life and improving maternal and infant mortality and morbidity,” said Marcos.

Her proposal includes salary increases and additional support for midwives working in public hospitals and health centers. The goal is to enhance both the profession and the quality of care provided.

Senate Bill No. 1724 also aims to implement programs and standards that improve the health and well-being of workers, including midwives.

Midwives have been calling for higher compensation due to the demands of their job and a shortage of staff, which have led to burnout and fatigue among them.

Studies suggest there should be one midwife for every 5,000 individuals in a community, but because of the shortage, one midiwife is currently responsible for about 80,000 people.IMT
