Face-to-face classes from pre-school to senior high school, both public and private schools, in Iloilo City are suspended today, April 7, due to the expected high heat index.

The heat index, which refers to how temperature feels to the human body, is forecast by state weather bureau PAGASA to reach 41 degrees Celsius (°C) in the city on the first day of the week.

People in areas with heat indices ranging from 33°C to 41°C, considered under the “extreme caution” category, are susceptible to heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

The class suspension was announced by Mayor Jerry Treñas on Sunday night, April 6, upon the recommendation of the Iloilo City Operations Center (OpCen).

“University presidents and school heads at the college level are also encouraged to adopt similar measures,” he said in a statement.

“Schools are advised to shift to alternative modes of learning such as modular or online delivery when the threshold (40°C) is reached,” the mayor added.

In a Facebook post, West Visayas State University (WVSU) announced the suspension of in-person classes at all levels at he main campus in La Paz district.IMT
