The Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) is eyeing to introduce a new course that aims to “develop highly competent professionals in the field of atmospheric science.”
Dr. Raul Muyong, ISAT U president, said their target is to offer the Bachelor of Science in Meteorology (BS Met) program starting this year.
The proposed four-year course was crafted by the Natural Science Department of ISAT U’s College of Arts and Sciences.
In a report by the Philippine News Agency, Muyong said they will be taking advantage of the presence of the Satellite Ground Receiving Station and the Knowledge Center for Weather, Atmospherical, Astronomical, and Geophysical Observations (KWAAGO) at their Dumangas campus that will serve as their laboratory.
KWAAGO serves as a resource center for scientific materials in the field of space technology, astronomy, meteorology, and remote sensing technology.
The BS Met program is “one of the priority courses” identified by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) “given the susceptibility of the Philippines to destructive meteorological phenomena.”
Muyong said the proposed program “will be presented to the University Curriculum Committee as well as their Academic Council for approval.”
At present, there’s no university in Western Visayas offering the course.IMT
