The breakup of Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo, more popularly known as KathNiel in the Philippine Showbiz industry, has rocked the whole nation. I would even assume that even in the dining tables of Malacañang and the very pious kitchen of the Manila Cathedral, the news has in a way managed to trigger lengthy conversations as to what really happened and who is to be blamed. Both actors have issued statements professing their unending love for each other and that they just can’t make it anymore as each is drifting away from the other.
The way both issued statements confirming the breakup is worthy of admiration. It showed class and maturity. Of course it was prepared by each actor’s public relations team but the delivery was great. I am a fan so I am writing and I want to dip my hands BUT not on the breakup. Truth to tell, their relationship or love team has made them millionaires and will continue to earn them millions while I will stay a penniless writer trying to improve my craft and perhaps earn a little living.
I am dipping my hands because the way the story spread overnight was overwhelming as if it has affected the lives of everyone in the country. Imagine attending a two-hour client meeting and seeing my social media feed getting flooded with the story of the breakup. I find it amusing how we all can relate and say our pieces on the tragic end of their relationship and even find time to analyse how it all started yet we do not really mind and care about the stories of abuses in the government. It’s as if the breakup of KathNeil will deny us food for at least a year and the Maharlika Fund being pushed by the administration of President Bongbong Marcos will never affect our way of living.
Love stories of famous personalities are juicy and interesting while issues affecting our lives are best left to the government officials. It’s the attitude of Filipinos that gave our elected leaders the opportunity to abuse their offices since nobody would mind after all or if there are those who would call their attention, it’s actually a voiceless minority that can be denied or allowed to simply pass. China has relentlessly harassed and abused the fisherfolk around Zambales and Palawan. Have you heard those who talked about the breakup of KathNeil say a word?
Meantime, people have started recalibrating their views on the breakup. The names of Andrea Brilliantes and Gillian Vicencio have started circulating on social media as the third party behind the breakup. I am more interested in knowing whose career will be affected by the breakup.
