The province of Iloilo logged 128 cases of leptospirosis from January to November this year, data from the Provincial Helath Office (PHO) showed.

The figure, which includes 10 deaths, was 228 percent higher compared to 39 cases recorded in the same period a year ago.

Cabatuan registered the most number of leptospirosis cases in the province with 17, followed by Oton, 15; and Maasin, 10.

Leptospirosis, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), is a bacterial disease that affects both humans and animals.

The disease is commonly acquired through rodent bites, direct contact with infected animals, or superficial cuts and open wounds which are exposed to a contaminated environment such as flood water.IMT
