The number of fatalities due to leptospirosis in the province of Iloilo increased to five, according to the Povincial Health Office (PHO).
The deaths were among the 113 cases of the bacterial disease recorded by PHO from January 1 to July 1 this year.
The five fatalities were from the towns of Leon, Carles, Cabatuan, Badiangan and Balasan.
Of the total cases 104 were males and nine were females. Most of them were 11 to 30 years old.
Leptospirosis, which affects both humans and animals, usually caused by exposure to contaminated water such as floodwater. The Leptospira bacteria can enter the body through the skin, eyes, nose and mouth.IMT
