Metered taxis are not allowed to charge their passengers a fixed rate even if the destination is out of town like the Iloilo International Airport, according to the Land Transportation Office (LTO-6).

This practice, LTO-6 stressed, is a “violation of transportation regulations” and those caught doing so could be punished with suspension and revocation of their driver’s licenses.

On Friday, Jan. 17, LTO issued a show cause order against a taxi driver who allegedly charged his passenger an unmetered rate.

In a Facebook video, the passenger claimed that the driver charged him a fixed fare of P600 from a hotel in Mandurriao, Iloilo City to the Iloilo International Airport in the town of Cabatuan.

The driver, under the Light of Glory Taxi Services Inc., was given five days to explain “why his driver’s license should not be suspended/revoked for being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle.”

In a statement, City Jerry Treñas urged LTO-6 and other concerned agencies to address the problem of overcharging and contracting being done by some taxi drivers.

“Let us ensure that every visitor experiences the best of Iloilo City’s hospitality and leaves with only positive memories,” he said.IMT
