Three children in Barangay Dalusan, Maasin, Iloilo died after they were trapped in their house while it was being razed by a fire on Wednesday night, July 3.

The victims, based on a report from the town’s fire station, were a four-year-old boy and girls aged five and one.

Their sisters aged 12 and eight managed to escape the fire but suffered multiple burns. They are currently being treated at Western Visayas Medical Center in Iloilo City.

Two of the fatalities were differently abled. The youngest sibling died while undergoing treatment at Federico Roman Tirador Sr. Memorial District Hospital in Janiuay town.

The children’s parents, Arnel and Michelle Decir, were not at home when the fire broke out. They were out to attend a wake.

The house, made of light materials, was totally burned.

According to FO2 Remigio Peloquero Jr., Maasin Fire Station arson investigator, the fire was caused by a bonfire that was made by the mother to ward off mosquitos.

“Based on witnesses and relatives in the area, they had a bonfire to drive away the mosquitoes,” he said.IMT
