The arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte is the start of the country’s healing from the deadly war against illegal drugs, according to former Iloilo City mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

“I believe this is not only a moment for justice to be served but a moment for our nation to heal — to confront the truth, to right the wrongs, and to choose love, compassion and unity over hate and division,” he said in a statement.

“To all those who, like me and my family, still live in fear but continue to hope and believe in justice — hold on. God has seen every tear, heard every cry, and His justice will always come in His perfect time,” Mabilog further said.

The former mayor, who was accused by Duterte of being a drug protector without clear evidence, returned to the country in September last year after seven years of self-imposed exile in the U.S.

Mabilog said he did not celebrate when he learned that Duterte was arrested on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant.

“I pause not to celebrate, but to reflect with a heart full of gratitude to God — for His justice, His mercy, and His unfailing love.”

According to the former mayor, he and his family, for many years, “walked through a valley of trials and tears.”

“My beloved wife and children have endured so much — standing beside me with silent strength and courage, though still living in fear for our safety and future,” Mabilog said.

“My late mother, who has now joined our Creator, carried these pains in her heart, and though she is no longer with us, I know she is at peace in God’s presence, her prayers answered in ways we are only beginning to see,” he added.

Duterte was brought to The Hague in the Netherlands to face charges of crimes against humanity.IMT
