Majority of the acute gastroenteritis (AGE) cases in Iloilo City involved children aged 10 years old and below.

As of Sept. 7, the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) has recorded 454 AGE cases.

Of the number, almost half or 222 belonged to the 1 to 10 years old age bracket and 43 were below 1 year old.

Othe patients belonged to the following age groups:

  • 11 to 20 years old – 60
  • 21 to 30 years old – 45
  • 31 to 40 years old – 26
  • 41 to 50 years old – 21
  • 51 to 60 years old – 13
  • 61 to 70 years old – 14
  • 71 to 80 years old – 10

Of the ten AGE deaths, seven were 10 years old and below. The youngest was a four-month-old baby.

Meanwhile, cholera cases in the city are now at 12, of which four were below 10 years old. All of them have already been tagged as recovered.

Dr. Roland Fortuna of the City Health Office (CHO) said the city government is tapping the Philippine Pediatric Society to help them manage the AGE cases.

The city is currently preparing its hydration unit in So-oc, Arevalo for AGE patients who have mild symptom. Those severe or critical cases will be referred to hospitals.

For the operationalization of the hydration unit, the city is hiring eight medical doctors, 25 nurses, 6 medical technologists, 4 laboratory aides; 9 nursing aides, 9 utility, and 3 drivers.IMT
